The design and User Interface (UI) of a social network is very important. If people don't know how to use the site intuitively, they are very quickly turned off by it. And since social network sites are intended to be used frequently, their designs need to be eye-catching and simple to use.
Stan Schroeder from Mashable.com wrote about the 10 Most Beautiful Social Networks earlier this week. He included Virb, Trig, PureVolume, My.9Rules, Pownce, Flickr, Threadless, Shelfari, Beautiful Society and Humble Voice. I agree that these are brilliant examples of fantastic design and UI.
