Dr Thomas Renz of Oakhill College speaks with Brent Siddall about the book that in Hebrew is known as 'The Book of Praises'. The Psalms of Ascent are the collection of 15 Psalms that were sung by God's people on their journey 'up to Jerusalem' to attend the Festivals, or by the priests as they ascended the Temple steps to begin the daily ministry. Today Dr Renz explores the background and message of a few of these songs. This is the last programme in this series.

It was great to be with people who share the same beliefs and catch up with old friends!

The day started with sermons and the main message was that Jesus paid the ultimate price for us by dying on the cross and how we need to finish that race. I realised there is a world to change and we are the kingdom generation who need to grasp this vision to make things happen. We then listened to a marvellous miracle from a woman who was blind but can now see! It was amazing to listen to the great things that God does.

The Holy Spirit was definitely present amongst us during worship. Healing and praying took place and it was great to see a youth pray for another youth. The fact we were there to encourage each other really shows how united we are in Christ.

There were also seminars on media, entertainment, fashion, law and medicine – just to mention a few. It was an eye-opener to see how God’s people can be used in different aspects of society. It never occurred to me that God can use us in everything we do, even our jobs!

Perhaps the most touching and eye-opening aspect of the day was hearing about God’s healing and that all things are possible through Christ who strengthens us. It taught me to acknowledge how blessed I am to have an amazing life with God and that He is always there for me, which means I needn’t worry.

Although it was sad that the day was ending, I look forward to other days living my life for God to the full. The day ended on a high with our mighty pizza feast. This was definitely a memorable day for me, and I’m sure it was the same for all the youths there.

Grace was seven days old when she was brought by her biological mother for adoption to our Center. Her mother just visited her once, and admitted that she could not care for her and wanted us to find good parents for her.

Grace stayed in our Center for 11 months. A Filipino, Christian childless couple both teachers by profession, fell in love with her immediately after seeing her case folder at the Social Welfare Office.

Mr. and Mrs. Jose and Janet Villa were just blessed for their new baby who was discharged to them on March 5, 2010. It is always a mix of joy and sadness as one of the children are leaving us. But our whole purpose for the children home is to find good parents for the abundant babies.

Medical mission
Is a program to help poor people with free medical and dental assistance. Today we had four dentists and two medical doctors helping almost 300 patients. These are all from our neighboring area in Cavite.

Because of the great help from the church in Ottawa Canada, we are able to help them all with free medication. They all listened to the gospel and learned how to receive Jesus. It is a great joy to be able to share the best medicine, ever – the gospel of the kingdom with the people.

Thanks for your help and prayers.

This “Coming to the Cross” 24/2 prayer is about reflection; a space and time to come and remember again the sacrifice that Jesus made for us.

It will also be a time for us to think about our church, think and pray over the different ministries we are a part of, and remember how the sacrifice of Jesus enables us to serve him better.

The “Coming to the Cross” 24/2 prayer will begin with a reflective more traditional service on the Wednesday evening, 31st March at 7.30pm.

The 24/2 will end with a service on the Friday the 2nd April at 7.30pm. At this service we will have a specific time of ministry; Ian Peacock will be leading us in worship.

Between these two services, the church will be available to be used by anyone who wants to pray & reflect, 24 hours a day. Please use the signup form below to let us know when you plan to come along to use this space.

It has been exciting to see how God is really moving amongst us as a church. We are expectant that He will meet with us during this time of prayer, and remind us again of His sacrifice of love for us.

Each generation of Christians has to wrestle with major theological issues. Today, Church membership is not one of them, and this is a real danger, according to Jonathan Leeman, author of recent release 'The Church and the Surprising Offence of God's Love - Reintroducing the Doctrines of Church Membership and Discipline'. Jonathan Leeman speaks to Tom Ward about the dangers he identifies in his book, and to Rev Dr David Instone-Brewer (Senior Research Fellow in Rabbinics and New Testament at Tyndale House, Cambridge) to gain his perspective.

Less than 1% of the profit from tea goes to the tea-farmers - that is, unless you buy Fairtrade tea. There were more people trafficked across the world in this year than there were in the whole period of time when William Wilberforce was campaigning against slavery... and you may be buying food that feeds that industry - unless of course you buy 'traffik-free' products. Phil Walker talks to representatives from both these organisations to find out how to find out the difference we could each make. Fairtrade Fortnight and Freedom Week runs from 22nd February until 7th March 2010.

“So Mephibosheth ate at David’s table like one of the king’s sons.” 2 Samuel 9:11b (NIV)

Last week, a few friends threw me a surprise birthday party. I was in awe at how much effort they had gone to orchestrate it, and even more when I found out they had planned it for weeks. I thought to myself, “Why would anyone think about me?”

A couple of Sundays before, Dave Emmett preached about eating at God’s table and knowing our true identity as sons and daughters of the king. He told the story of King David in 2 Samuel 9, who invited crippled Mephibosheth to eat regularly at his table as though he was the King’s own son.

From then on, the Holy Spirit reminded me that I was worth more than I thought. I repented of my small thinking and low opinions of myself, as though I was of so little value to my friends that they should plan anything for my birthday.

For a long time, false humility robbed me of my true identity. But Dave’s message and the surprise birthday really changed me. That night, I felt honoured and recognised. I was certainly worth all their time and effort in planning the birthday-do.

This is the same honour God has given to us. We are to know our self-worth and our God-given rights as the King’s sons and daughters, the right to sit next to him and dine with him. We as individuals are highly favoured and loved by the King himself. We can now live a life of freedom and integrity because Jesus took our shame and in exchange gave us his honour when he died for us.

Listen again to Dave’s preach here.

Dr Thomas Renz of Oakhill College speaks with Brent Siddall about the book that in Hebrew is known as 'The Book of Praises'. Two Psalms are studied in today's programme: Psalm 30 comes straight from the heart of a person of prayer. It is the prayer of one who is fully aware of the nightmare of death offering profound thanksgiving to God for His mercies. Psalm 34 is a 'wisdom psalm', full of praise to the God Who ransoms, releases, rescues and protects.

“Father to the fatherless, defender of widows – this is God, whose dwelling is holy. God places the lonely in families; he sets the prisoners free and gives them joy.” Psalm 68: 5-6 (NLT)

The VIP Women’s Night was yet another successful night held for women in the city who are homeless and living in hostels.

It was an opportunity for King’s Church members to practically demonstrate the love of Jesus to these women by providing food, clothes, toiletries and showing them how important they are in God’s eyes.

Having attended VIP for the last three years, I can say that it just keeps getting better and better every year.

The room was set up like a wedding party, complete with pink and black halogen balloons, the night’s menu, sparkling juice and goodie bags. The delicious chicken balti could already be smelled from the hallway.

The night was hosted by Judith Ude and the gospel shared by Kate Hancock. Shona then told a powerful testimony of how Jesus saved her from her lowest point in life and how things have changed since becoming homeless herself. She was baptised in water three weeks ago and is now very much a part of the church family.

Sisters Sarah and Louise Gregg performed a string of ballads from Frank Sinatra, Whitney Houston and Coldplay among many others while the women enjoyed their delicious homemade desserts – a choice between chocolate gateau with fresh fruits and cream or banoffee pie, served with tea and coffee.

After their meals, the women were pampered with hand massages, manicures and hairdos. It was a great time to get to know the ladies even better. Many left with bags and bags of clothes, shoes and accessories which were generously donated by members of the church.

The women took away a lot from that night, but most importantly they took with them the love of Jesus as demonstrated through every Christian on that night.

Wan-Phing Lim

We believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him… For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage one another with these words.

The resurrection of Jesus is the basis of the Christian faith. Paul seems to be clear that if we don’t or won’t or can’t believe this, then everything else about Christianity will start to unravel. We’ve begun preaching and reflecting on 1 Corinthians 15 – a long chapter in which Paul untangles the wonky ideas of the Corinthians and challenges us to think through the implications of the difference that resurrection makes in everyday living.

To think this through, I’ve attached some links to articles that might help you in your thinking – whether you’ve just begun to get your head around this, or whether you’ve been a believer for many years.

LKH is pleased to welcome the Whitley Lecturer David Southall to the First Tuesday Programme. These seminars are free and all are invited to attend. 7.30 start.

Why does the Apostle Paul personify righteousness and sin in Romans 6? Whydoes the character "Righteousness" act out its role as a slave master in opposition to "Slave Master Sin?" In this seminar David J. Southall explores Pauline personification and makes the case that the Apostle uses the poetic ways of speaking as modes of character invention and then goes on to show that personified "Righteousness", becomes Paul's way of talking about Christ in passages which are rich in metaphor and the story of Christ.

Southall gives an exegesis of Romans 6:15-23 which affirms this view and looks at the implications of his position for aspects of Pauline theology including "the justification debate" and universalism.

Original Article

Did you know that a good amount of the chart hits of the 50s and 60s started out as gospel music? Maybe you've heard a recent song and thought, "Great tune! Pity it isn't about God!" Well, in the US there is a love for Christian parodies of popular music... music where the lyrics are re-written for the glory of God. Today, Ian Marron speaks to J Jackson, vocalist and lyricist with 'that parody band', ApologetiX.

Original Article

The aim of the WearPeace Project is to create a range of clothing and accessories under the WearPeace label that can sold locally/ nationally / international to promote the “save a life not take a life’ message. It is envisaged that all the clothes / accessories will contain a small quantity of decommissioned gun metal or metal from an unused bullet – as designer tags or fashion details, to reinforce the message of every garment purchased will help to take another gun out of circulation.

Check out some of the designs at the WearPeace blogsite.

“…you shall raise up the foundations of many generations; you shall be called the repairer of the breach, the restorer of streets to dwell in” Isaiah 58:12 (NIV)

God has chosen His people, the church, to be the way in which we see the streets we live in restored and repaired. We regularly meet together as a church in King’s House which is surrounded by the areas of Brunswick, Hulme and Ardwick.

As we leave King’s House we are no less the church & we continue to be surrounded by people who need to see restoration in their lives. Therefore we, the church, are starting a Kids Club as a way to reach out to those around us.

What is Kids Club?

Kids Club is an hour of fun, games, music and Bible teaching for 7-11 year olds. It’s a chance to share the love of Jesus in a fun, enjoyable & relevant way. It’s a great opportunity for the children in the church to learn more about Jesus and to reach out to their friends. It’s also a great opportunity for us to reach out to the children in the area surrounding King’s House in Central Manchester.

Parent’s Café

Alongside Kids Club we are running a café for the parents and families to relax in. There will be delicious food, comfy seats and good company. This is a chance for the families of those children who attend Kids Club to experience the love of Jesus and to build relationship with those who are part of the church.

When is Kids Club?

It will be on alternate Saturday mornings from 10.30-11.30am starting on 17th April.

Get involved!

Here is a wonderful opportunity to both serve the children in the church and to reach out to our local community! I’m sure you’re desperate to know how you can get involved! We need people to help serve with the children, drive the buses, help with home visits, set up and pack down, serve in the cafe and help with administration. If you want to get involved please speak to Rachel Evans, leave your details at the helpdesk or email kidsclub@kingschurch-manchester.org

Are you 7-11yrs old? Read this!!

We’d love you to come to Kids Club and to have fun learning more about Jesus. We’d love you too to think about your friends in your class or on your street who you’d like to bring along. Jesus has chosen you and sent you to see the lives of people around you changed and restored!

PeaceWeek 2010 - March 6-13 - Peace in the Mix

Everything is coming together for the 8th inner-south Manchester PeaceWeek. It will be the usual mix of centrally organised events and a number from other groups. See our events list on this website and also on the PeaceWeek and OSBA websites. New this year is the Peace Debate, one of several events with Rev Nims Obunge, CEO of London Week of Peace. It would be great to see some local churches represented.

The big event for mass-participation is the Lantern Parade on Friday March 12. This is a great way to 'be part of the mix' in the community and support peace and cohesion in the most basic way... by TURNING UP! It's 2 hours, once a year. What could you possibly be doing that is more important?!!

This is the second tournament that has been put on and we hope to repeat it every year and expand the number of schools involved.

On Thursday 11th March and Friday 12th March 2010 Police Officers from the Neighbourhood Engagement Team and First Group will visit all of the schools to give a brief educational talk about safety and the consequences of anti social behaviour on public transport, present trophies to all teams and football boots to the winning team.
Today, Ian Marron speaks to Mark Bradford (Righteous Pop Music) and Ron Perry (Happy Days Productions) about their ministry.

Original Article

In this series of essays, Helen Parry explores some basic principles for understanding the Bible. The essays are posted monthly on the LICC website, normally on the third Monday of the month. Since interpretation is not a dry academic exercise but is essential to a proper use of Scripture, each essay is followed by questions for reflection (and discussion with others, where applicable), and suggestions for action.

Original Article

“Redeeming Our Communities” (ROC) is a national initiative by Christian organisation, CityLinks. It’s aim is to be a catalyst for community transformation by promoting prayer and policing in partnership for crime and disorder reduction. After a big city-wide event last year, the ROC Conversations are a series of local events designed to bring churches, communities and police together to discuss practical ideas and ways of working together for the good of the community. The central Manchester event is during PeaceWeek and we are pleased to include it in our events schedule and encourage lots of you to go along (even if you’re not part of a church). Hear about existing projects that could be used in your area, dream up new ideas and get them kick-started.

Venue is the New Covenant Church, Matthews Lane, Levenshulme M12 4QW (near Netto on the A6). Time: 7.30pm. Admission free.

(This article if from the Spring 2010 issue of flow Magazine)

***

Matt Hawthorne joined the Reflex team last year. Here are a few extracts from his diary during his first few months on the job.

There is a lad in our Hindley discipleship group called Evan*. He used to argue with the officers and get into fights daily (and had the ability to win most of them as well). He just had a lack of respect for everyone and himself. He recently became a Christian and the change in his attitude is astonishing. He now has a servant hearted attitude, helping out even before asked. Even the officers are shocked at the change. I asked him why, and he replied, ‘That’s what happens when you put your life in God’s hands’.

—–

One lad we first met in Forest Bank in September called Lee had a very hard exterior to begin with. He really didn’t want to open up, and kept himself to himself. However, after completing the music course, Lee asked to start our Uncut course, introducing the Christian faith. It was clear that he was really searching, but at the same time not wanting to be too vulnerable. A couple of weeks into the course we found out that Lee was in for a crime that had a lot of media attention. Because of this tragedy, Lee was understandably holding a huge amount of guilt, but praise God that Lee became a Christian at the end of the Uncut course, and is now part of a Discipleship course every Thursday.

—–

I was leading a Bible study in Hindley last Tuesday, going through Mark with eight lads aged between 16 and 18. Five of these guys had become Christians recently and are really growing and maturing. Three other guys had completed the Alpha course but not become Christians, but at the end of the session were really interested.

One of the three – Darren – was asking questions and said that he wanted to become a Christian but that he didn’t want to lose his youth. Basically, he wanted to be able to go out, get drunk and sleep around. Without the team saying a word, the inmates who were already Christians started to explain how Jesus had changed them. One told about how since becoming a Christian, he didn’t want to get drunk, take drugs or sleep around. After he’s hearing this, Darren gave his life to Christ along with another guy. At the end of the session the whole group were really excited about being ‘brothers’ in Christ!

—–

One of the managers from Styal came for a meeting, asking us to expand the work we do, thanks to the success we’ve seen over the last six months. On the wing that we work on regularly, there used to be an incident of some sort every week – either a riot, a fight, self-harming, or attempted suicide. But since Reflex started running sessions, there have been no incidents for six months! She loved both the youth work and the Christian work that we do, and asked us to do more in the prison.

*All young people’s names have been changed

Original Article

Dr Thomas Renz of Oakhill College speaks with Brent Siddall about the book that in Hebrew is known as ‘The Book of Praises’. The 23rd Psalm has become one of the best known and most pigeon-holed Psalms in the book! It speaks of spiritual growth, backsliding and the dangers of ignoring God’s shepherding. The author was talking far more about spiritual life than about physical death!

Original Article

It was great to see so many members of the church community giving up their time and energy to make the event something special. The red carpet was rolled out in the foyer, the tables were festooned with balloons and laid out as if for a wedding party. Our guests were certainly in for a treat. Some of them were eagerly waiting outside in the cold long before the doors were opened at 6:30pm.

The catering team had laid on an excellent meal and there was no shortage of willing helpers both for serving food and cleaning up behind the scenes. The desserts in particular were a culinary delight, sweet and loaded with calories, just the way I like them.

The background music and singing provided by members of the worship team was low key and jazzy and gave a real cabaret feel to the event.

A moving testimony was given by Malcolm, now a member of King’s Church, who was himself a guest on a VIP night last year. He gave a humble account of how his encounter with Jesus had turned his life around. Then he wholeheartedly encouraged the listeners to make that same step of faith for themselves.

After the meal was served our guests were given the opportunity to make a few additions to their wardrobe. There was a great selection of clothing and shoes generously provided by members of the church and the King’s Church Barber Shop trio were in action for the rest of the evening providing the final trimmings.

All in all it was a fantastic evening and a wonderful opportunity to share the love of God in a real and practical way to some of the less advantaged members of our community.

How can Christians speak to today's youth about the bible in meaningful ways? There are a lot of different opinions and, on today's programme, James Fullard talks to two people using youth culture itself to break down the barriers. James' guests are Siku, a 'fantasy concept artist' who worked on producing the Manga Bible, and 'Wisdom', a Christian Hip-Hop performer from the band Green Jade, who use music and multi-media performances to speak to those involved in knife and gun violence.

Original Article

The Passage

Matthew 13v44-52

The Parable of the Hidden Treasure

44“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.

The Parable of the Pearl of Great Value

45“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, 46who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it.

New and Old Treasures

51 “Have you understood all these things?” They said to him, “Yes.” 52And he said to them, “Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house, who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.”

The Notes

- Aim
– Be convicted that: “having Jesus as king is worth more than anything else in the universe”
– He is infinitely valuable
– Our souls are made to treasure Him
– The enemy will try to prevent us from this
– But God is more powerful than Satan

- Background
– Jesus has been teaching in parables
— Parable of the Sower
— Parable of the Weeds
— Parable of the Mustard Seed and the Yeast
– This is another of these parables

- The Passage
– What’s Obvious?
— 2 people find something valuable
— They go to extreme lengths to have it
—- They both sell everything they have to get it

– Why the extreme behaviour?
— Out of Joy
— The treasure is so valuable possessions become worthless

– So What?
— Jesus says the Kingdom of Heaven is like this!
— In the Kingdom of Heaven Jesus reigns supreme
— It’s a place of joy, peace, assurance
— So it is worth forsaking everything WE HAVE for Jesus!
—- More valuable than a degree
—- More valuable than having a relationship
— This is Because these things are only in this life
— In Jesus we have eternal life

– Do you still hold onto things less valuable than Jesus?
– Do you close your eyes to Jesus’ infinite worth?
– How Valuable is Jesus to you?

– When we see Jesus we give up whatever stops us from treasuring Him

– In the parable, the men do not run from the things they have
— Sell the things they have
— They use the things they have to get to the treasure
— We can do that too
—- How does your degree, your relationship, your passion help you to come closer to Jesus?
—- Jesus is king in all these things

– Is there stuff you need to cut out to help you treasure Jesus?
– Is there stuff you can pursue to help you treasure Jesus?
– Do you feel the same joy as the man in the parable?
— If not pray that God will give you that joy

– Verses 51-52 seem like an odd response
— Disciples say they have understood so Jesus talks about a scribe
—- If we treasure Jesus we’ll be teaching others
—- So we can treasure Jesus by studying him
—- If we study Him we’ll be like these scribes
– Our souls were made to embrace Jesus as treasure
— For our own good
— For the good of others

- Response
– Is Jesus your Treasure?
– Is He infinitely more valuable to you than anything else?
– Can you say with Isaac Watts “When I survey the Wondrous cross, on which the Prince of Glory died, My richest gain I count but loss”

Original Article

Bishop Davies, Co-Adjutor Bishop of Shrewsbury, was Secretary to Bishop Kelly at the beginning of the Oratorian venture at the Holy Name. At the outset and throughout our 18 years here he has been particularly supportive of our work. We offer our prayers for him as he takes up his pastoral duties across the Mersey.

Shrove Tuesday (Pancake day!) marked the beginning of Lent, traditionally a time of reflection in the run-up to the celebrations of Easter. C3 have some great things planned for this special time of year. If Jesus was here with us today, where would he hang out? what would he think of our lives, our churches and our government. He had some pretty strong things to say about the religious and political leaders of his own day, what would he think of ours? So this lent, we're asking ... where would Jesus be?

Sunday 21st February, 10:30am

In the wilderness?Where would Jesus to find solitude? Would he be able to leave his blackberry behind?

Sunday 28th February, 10:30am

In the pub? Jesus was accused of being a 'glutton and a drunkard' so he obviously enjoyed good meal out with friends. Would we find him in a gastropub, a social club or at the chippy?

Sunday 7th March, 10:30am

Saving the world? Would Jesus be a greenpeace campaigner or a politician? Would he be running for office or running for sport relief?

Sunday 14th March, 10:30am

In church? Would we find Jesus hanging out at Westminster Abbey, or in a universtiy theology department or selling cakes at the church fete?

Sunday 21st March, 10:30am

At home?
