To develop a network of people committed to praying for media, arts and entertainment every day using the prayer focus.<o:p></o:p> <h1>The Story So Far…<o:p></o:p></h1> by Artisan founder, Steve Cole <o:p></o:p> I established Artisan over ten years ago with the vision of providing support to Christians involved in the music industry which has since broadened to Media, Arts and Fashion.  As a non professional musician I had the privilege of working alongside some great young musicians including one guy who at the age of 19 was invited by a big name to play in the band on the American leg of the tour.  Artisan came into being as a result of seeing the implications this decision had on his spiritual journey as a result of there being no specific infrastructure of support. <o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> In April 1998 we launched our first simple publication written by people in the industry for people operating in the industry called Backstage. Initially this went out to around one hundred people. Through word of mouth the network developed and before long the publication was going to 500 people.    Personally, I was still dissatisfied. Compared to the influence, power and magnitude of the industry I knew that simply producing a regular publication was the equivalent of a spec of dust on a spec of dust! I remember going through a phase of being so desperate for God to provide some direction, some instruction. After a time of grappling with the issue and pacing up and down as I do, I sensed that God had given me three words which would be important for us as a growing community of Christians involved in these industries.  To this day these are still the words that we aspire to.     UNITY – HUMILTY – PRAYER    It sounds good, but what does it mean in reality?    Unity – We need one another. Life and our relationship with God was never designed to be a solo journey.    Humility – As individuals we all have our part to play, but we are not the key. Only God can transform these industries.    Prayer – As in all of life, prayer must be central. It is so often key to seeing God breaking into nations; people; industries.   I wrote to the Backstage network and communicated what I felt God was challenging us with. I took a step of faith and booked a central <st1:city><st1:place>London</st1:place></st1:city> venue in November 1998 and invited the network together with this agenda of unity, humility and prayer. To my amazement a few hundred people representing many parts of the industry came together to worship God, pray for one another and pray for the industries. That was eight years ago and we have since been meeting most months in <st1:city><st1:place>London</st1:place></st1:city> to pray. <o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> In February 2002 a number of us made a trip to <st1:state><st1:place>New York</st1:place></st1:state> to begin to build a sense of fusion and relationship with people and organisations with a similar vision.  The following year I did the same in <st1:city><st1:place>Los Angeles</st1:place></st1:city> with the desire of creating a sense of organisational unity and collaboration.  After twelve visits to <st1:state><st1:place>New York</st1:place></st1:state> 29 leaders representing 12 Arts media and fashion initiatives came together to talk about the first collaborative prayer event in <st1:state><st1:place>New York</st1:place></st1:state> for people involved in the industry.  In March 2005 350 people including 35 people from <st1:city><st1:place>London</st1:place></st1:city> came together to elevate Jesus, pray for one another and the industries.  Since then in <st1:state><st1:place>New York</st1:place></st1:state> there have been another three events.<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> In November 2006 we had our first prayer event in <st1:city><st1:place>San Francisco</st1:place></st1:city> at a gallery/club space at the heart of the city.  SF is such an important Hub especially in the areas of film and gaming.  Further prayer events will be taking place in <st1:city><st1:place>San Francisco</st1:place></st1:city> in the future.  In Los Angeles Artisan is helping to facilitate a collaborative prayer event on the weekend of the Oscars in February 2007. <o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> Alongside the international development and the monthly event in <st1:city><st1:place>London</st1:place></st1:city> we have also launched the prayer events in other <st1:country-region><st1:place>UK</st1:place></st1:country-region> cities.  In January 2006 we launched our first event in <st1:city><st1:place>Bristol</st1:place></st1:city> and in October 2006 we also launched in <st1:city><st1:place>Birmingham</st1:place></st1:city> and <st1:city><st1:place>Manchester</st1:place></st1:city>.  These are monthly gatherings providing safe space for industry people to build relational fusion and pray.  In 2007 here will be other industry prayer events in other cities around the world which we will keep you posted on.<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> To facilitate the international development we re-branded the Backstage publication to Artisan.  The first Artisan magazine was produced in April 2004 with each edition grappling with themes such as Ambition, rejection, image, money, touring, success, the bible, Jesus and church.  These publications are now distributed to nearly 5000 people around the world.<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> My desire is to see people involved in the Media, Arts and Fashion industries operating with a sense of being valued, supported, prayed for and empowered to be ‘light life’ in every sphere of influence.  I am so encouraged to see a growing movement of people that combine a passion for the craft and the places of work and a longing to be distinct and exciting and attractive Jesus subversives in the heart of these most influential and important industries.  If Artisan can play a small role in encouraging and enabling and facilitating this through our prayer events and the quarterly publications then I’m happy. 45 Bloom Street Barnabus began in August 1991, when Peter Green went and sat in Piccadilly Gardens with a bag of sandwiches and a thermos flask, waiting for the homeless and hungry to pay him a visit. From those roots we opened The Beacon, our drop in centre, in 2000, which has continued to grow over the years.  We now provide full breakfasts, free of charge, two mornings a week for anywhere up to sixty people a day.  Toilets, showers and laundry facilities are also available.  The Beacon is undergoing refurbishment at the moment, and we hope to reopen our doors to our friends at the beginning of September (2007). As well as these facilities, we run literacy and numeracy classes, an over 40's session, ladies day, and our very own Barnabus football team, which acts as a wonderful outreach to young men with very little direction in their lives. Our evening outreach remains central to our ministry.  We have a dedicated team of volunteers who work from our kitchen-trailer unit three nights a week, delivering hot drinks and sandwiches to our friends, and providing support and a listening ear.  There is also a small team of nurses who work on one evening a week, providing basic medical care to those who need it among the one hundred to one hundred and fifty people who can come along on any one night. We also have Men's and Women's Support Workers, who make regular visits to local prisons, providing support to people at their most vulnerable, whether that is when they first arrive on conviction, or helping them reorganise their lives upon release.  Our women's outreach also involves work in Manchester's Red Light District where we work amongst the women involved in prostitution, who can come along for a cup of tea and a bit of TLC, as well as general medical advice. We are very grateful for the links with churches and our many friends across our city, who uphold us in prayer, and whose generous donations and gifts such as toiletries and food, as well as sandwiches for our evening ministry, are central to our continuation of the work our Lord has placed upon our hearts. Brooklands The Church of the Nazarene is the largest denomination in the Wesleyan-Arminian theological tradition. Nazarenes believe that God wants Christians to live a holy life. We must seek forgiveness from God for our sins, and following this, our hearts and lives will be filled by a love for God and our fellow man. As we live our Christian lives, we develop a deeper love and devotion to God, and a greater desire to do the things that God would want us to do. This can be seen in the lives of Christians as they seek to serve God through service to others. We believe that to serve God in this way is an expression of our love for Him, and one way in which we can show our appreciation for the grace that was shown to us when Jesus Christ died on the cross, to take the punishment for the things we have done wrong. Government and administration The headquarters of the Church of the Nazarene is in Kansas City in the United States. Six elected representatives are charged with the responsibility of overseeing the worldwide work of the church. The Church of the Nazarene in the British Isles is divided into two districts. The North District consists of churches in Scotland, Northern Ireland, and some northern English towns. The South District comprises of 58 churches from the remainder of England, and Wales. The churches of each district meet once a year to elect representatives who will oversee the work of the church in the geographical districts. Some of these representatives are full time paid workers, funded by the churches, and others are simply church members, carrying out their duties in their spare time. Most of the churches have their own ministers, known as pastors, whose job it is to look after the spiritual needs and development of their local church members, or congregations. This is done with the assistance of a team of local members, elected annually by the local churches. These voluntary church workers help the pastor to deliver the good news of Jesus Christ, and serve the communities in which they are situated. A Tradition of Service We are compassionate people. We believe in helping and serving others! This is expressed through our service within our community. We also contribute to the funds of the general church. The worldwide network of Nazarene churches makes it possible for us to serve as a source of assistance to needy nations. In recent years, we have been able to assist people in every part of the globe. From war and famine relief in Rwanda and Zaire, to health care training in India, to serving orphaned children in Guatemala. We provide money for food, medical supplies, clothing, and other items to those in a number of countries where there are very great needs. In addition, the denomination’s missionary infrastructure is often used by other relief agencies when they need assistance in getting supplies to people of countries in remote or troubled areas. We aim to focus on three things <ul> <li>Christ </li> <li>Community </li> <li>Creativity </li> </ul> We run several creativity groups which mix Christians with others; art glass, card making, arts & crafts, creative writing, photography, music and technology - we would do more if there were more people to lead - we are open to suggestions! These groups all meet at differing times during the week and in varying places. In the mornings we meet as an all-age community from about 10.00 am, we always eat something together! There is an arts & craft activity as an option on the day's theme. There is teaching and discussion aimed at adults and a time when we are all together, all ages. Ardwick Take a serious look at an old concept… CHALLENGE TEAM UK Challenge Team UK is a group of four young adult volunteers (two guys and two girls) who travel to schools in the country presenting the option of chastity as an alternative to the ‘safe sex’ message. The organisation started in Canada but was handed over to a lady called Sue Relf in Eastbourne, five years ago. As an organisation we have recognised, as I’m sure most of you have, that in today’s society sex has lost its meaning. No longer can you listen to music, turn on T.V., open a magazine, or even walk down the street without there being some unavoidable reference to sex. If young people don’t know what options they have then they only know what the media tells them: ‘It’s a healthy expression of your feelings, just make sure you use a condom’. Yet we have the highest rate of teenage pregnancies in Europe, sexually transmitted infections are rising at an alarming rate and, lest we forget, the incalculable emotional damage. Since 2004 there have been 9 Challenge Teams that have reached 40,000 young people in the UK with the message of saving sex for marriage. Last Autumn we toured the schools in the Manchester and North West area and in 3 weeks managed to reach 5,000 pupils. The response up and down the country has been overwhelming from both teachers and pupils alike, and the interest from schools is growing rapidly. One of the reasons the presentation is so well received is because Challenge Team is young people talking to other young people about issues which they themselves are faced with, and is presented in a fun, factual, personal, but above all realistic way. We see it as both an honour and a privilege to be given the opportunity to teach such kingdom principles in this secular age. The team itself have a week's training down at the beautiful 'Ashburnham Place' in Battle and all food, travel and accommodation is paid for throughout the tour. We are also now offering £20 a week spending money for each team member. The team stay with Christian families across the country, and at school holidays that coincide with the tour we pay for their transport back home. I was a team member for two years and was amazed at the response from the young people, they are crying out to hear this message and relieved when it comes along. I am now employed by Challenge Team UK, based up in Manchester, to find the new teams and and train them up to hit the young people with this powerful message. BACKGROUND Changemakers is an organisation which is being built by local people for local people - and for the common good of Manchester. It is a response to people's experience of feeling powerless to influence the decisions which impact upon their lives. It is also a response to, and from, the significant numbers of people in Manchester who are marginalised from the mainstream by poverty and disadvantage. In recent years both local and national government have worked to develop structures which enable real citizen participation. While some of these are to be applauded, others have not been sufficiently funded to be sustainable, or they are not genuinely focused on the view from the grassroots and so become simply a sounding board for public service providers. There is little widespread public trust in many of these initiatives. Often overlooked is the fact that our towns and cities are influenced far more by the private sector than by anyone else. So as well as engaging with political representatives and public servants, citizens also need spaces in which they can hold to account the private interests which increasingly shape the public domain.   THE ORGANISATION Changemakers is a growing coalition of local organisations and concerned individuals. It brings together people from the great diversity of people which make up Manchester – community groups, tenants and residents, faith-based organisations, minority ethnic groups, refugees and asylum seekers, members of trades unions, and many more. The key aim of the organisation is train and develop people in these organisations to be confident and effective in taking part in public life around agreed issues. The organisation is independent and non-partisan. It is run by local people from groups of good standing in the community. Each member groups elects delegates onto the central governing and strategic planning groups of Changemakers. The organisation  aims to open up new channels of participation and communication with power holders and service providers from all sectors.   HOW IT WORKS Most of the funds which support Changemakers are from charitable trusts, but member groups are also asked to pay an annual subscription depending upon the size of the group and its ability to pay. Initially working in London and then on the Continent, this group was involved in sharing the love of the Messiah and in bringing practical help to those in need. CMJ founded Christ Church, Jerusalem in 1841. This, the oldest Protestant Church in the Middle East, saw former Rabbi Michael Solomon Alexander installed as the first Anglican Bishop of Jerusalem, with all main services conducted in Hebrew. CMJ also built a hospital and schools in Jerusalem. The 20th Century saw the horrors of the Holocaust, the return of the Jewish people to Israel, and the change in perception of Jewish Christians as Messianic Jews rather than Hebrew Christians. Thankfully, there is no longer a need for mission hospitals or "soup kitchens" in the East End of London (though relief help is still needed for Jewish people in Eastern Europe). Today the need continues to take the good news of the Messiah to His own people. Our mission remains to: encourage Jewish people to come to faith in Jesus as their Messiah; to support them in serving Him as Lord in the light of God's purposes for them; and to equip the Church to be involved in this mission. Didsbury Dignity is a visionary Christian organisation that seeks to pioneer change through evangelism and hands-on development projects. As Christians we believe that Jesus has called us to make a difference to other people’s lives, particularly those forgotten by the developed world and trapped in an endless cycle of poverty, hardship and suffering. Dignity’s goal is for the Church to be the agent of change. Our predominant focus is to transform extremely poor communities in rural Africa by building sustainable, long-term projects in partnership with local organisations. Dene Rd LICC Manchester is a response to repeated requests from people in the North-West to have ‘live’ access to the kind of culturally engaged, Biblical thinking that London Institute of Contemporary Christianity (LICC) provides through its events and courses. LICC was founded by John Stott in 1982 with the core belief that every part of our lives comes under the Lordship of Christ, and that all of life is a context for worship, mission, ministry and active Christian engagement – twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week – whole-life Christianity. The Manchester partnership exists to enable the delivery of LICC’s Vision to ‘contribute to the transformation of the UK by making whole-life discipleship an unavoidable, central, operationally active component of the culture of the leaders and people of the Church’, through working together in the North-West, beginning in Manchester. If you’ve got a question that we haven’t answered then you might not be the only person asking it! Please send us a question and we’ll do our best to answer it. If it is a great question (or answer!) we’ll put it here and you never know, your question may even help someone else. What kind of church are you? We are an Elim Pentecostal Church. Elim has over 700 churches in the UK and each one is different so that might not be the most helpful description! We are a friendly church that is active in the local community. Our music is lively and contemporary and the preaching practical and grounded in the Bible. What should I expect on a Sunday? The first thing you should expect is a warm welcome! Then make yourself comfortable or browse our information stand. Our music and worship is lively playing a mixture of Hillsongs, Hillsongs United, Matt Redman, Delirious and homegrown songs. The message lasts for around 30 minutes and we finish off with another song. The service lasts for around 90 minutes but please stick around for a drink and a chat. How do I get to your Church The Church is fairly easy to find once you know where it is! Check out our Find Us page for more information about getting to one of our sites. If you have difficulty in getting to our Sunday morning services you may be able to take advantage of our minibus pick up service. What should I wear? Whatever you are comfortable in! Some of the church wear suit and tie, some wear national costume, some wear hats some don’t, some wear jeans; we’ve even seen shorts in hot weather! If you are happy wearing a suit then feel free to wear a suit. If you want to wear jeans and t-shirt then feel free; we don’t have dress codes. How many people come to the Lighthouse? We get around 250-300 at our 10.30am service so we recommend getting there early to make sure you get a seat. Whilst our new building is being refitted we are holding our Sunday services at Peel Hall, Salford University. There is also an Indian congregation that meets at 9.30am in Wythenshawe and they average around 60. At Sandy Lane, Chorlton the Eritrean congregation meets and they have around 200 people attending. If we had a room big enough to hold everyone there would be between 550-600 people. Manchester

Flixton Six words Our Community is founded on six words given to us by God. These principles guide how we live and approach the work God calls us to do. Unity Jesus wants us to be unified, that is His prayer for us (John 17:20-21). We live in a world of divisions – divided families, divided societies, divided nations. As the family of God we are called to be different, to live as one. When we are united under Christ's headship there is peace, reconciliation and healing. In this Community we come from all Christian denominations to pray and serve together, celebrating our oneness in Jesus. Renewal Jesus brings radical transformation. His challenge is “Behold, I make all things new.” (Rev. 21:5). We desperately need to see Christ's transforming power in ourselves and our society. We need to overcome our fear of change. We endeavour to embrace, live and proclaim the truth of the radical gospel, believing that God is calling His people to change. He wants us to encounter him, to experience a new freedom through His Holy Spirit. This is the freedom to give and receive love. Healing Healing is simply putting right what is wrong. Jesus offers us personal righteousness - a right relationship with God - and from this all relationships in our lives are healed. As Christians our mission is to be healed and to be instruments of healing. The hope of healing is the message of the Bible. Simplicity & Poverty The simplicity of Jesus is profound. He cuts through the complications of our lives and points us to the bedrock truth of His gospel. Society tells us to scramble up the ladder of power, wealth and popularity. Jesus tells us that when we go to the bottom of the ladder we meet the poor, rejected and marginalised. We meet Him. We believe that “unless you change and become like little children you will never enter the kingdom of heaven” (Matt 18:3). Jesus' command to us is simple “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. Love your neighbour as yourself.” (Matt 22:37). We are a community of ordinary people. We pray for each other every day. We walk in faith, and have no source of income other than gifts. We depend on God, endeavouring to present the truth of the radical gospel. Urgency Our walk is one of balance, between prayer and action, between sitting and running. We see the threat to society of false gods, secular humanism, the abandonment of God's ways. The Church and Christian faith are under serious assault and the foundations of western society are collapsing. God promises “if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear them from heaven and heal their land.” (2 Chron 7:14) All the aspects of our Community are our response to this urgent need. Benchill, Wythenshawe Micah Challenge is a global movement of Christians that aims to ignite and fuel a passion to bring about the alleviation of poverty and to speak out, with a common voice, against the injustices of poverty. It is already uniting countries in the North and South to call their governments to account to realise the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), halving poverty by 2015. In the UK, it seeks to build on the momentum created by the Make Poverty History campaign. 2005 was marked by a fantastic groundswell of voices that called for substantial improvement to aid, trade and debt. We need to continue to press the UK government to do more to alleviate poverty and hold them to the promises they made in 2000. A number of groups have been working on Micah Challenge. They include: Tearfund, SPEAK, World Vision, Evangelical Alliance, Shaftsbury Society, Alpha/HTB, Faithworks, Global Connections, ACEA, CMF and BMS World Mission among others. In the late 1990’s, Ni-Cola formed a Dance Group known as GSD (God Said Dance). GSD danced in local churches, events, and Supported local and international artists such as Elaine Hanley, and Leiutenant Stitchie.   Ni-Cola then went onto Bible school, for a year, under the ministry of Ulf Ekman at Word of Life Bible centre in Sweden. This is where Ni-Cola caught the vision of ministry described by herself as, “Simply meeting the needs of the people, by the power of the Holy Spirit”. Ni-Cola’s heart for souls was ignited and her mission was set before her to win souls for Christ by whatever means possible.   On her return to England, Ni-Cola’s mother suddenly passed away, however in the midst of the grieving process she was encouraged to write a song, which later became her first release entitled “Still Here” in 2005. Ni-Cola could never have imagined that her musical career would have come out of such devastating circumstances. Ni-Cola then went on to complete a Performing Arts degree at the University of Salford, whilst pursuing her music career and believes this enhanced her confidence and delivery of performance on stage.   At present, Ni-Cola is a member of Victory Outreach Manchester, where she is a minister of music, motivational speaker, and youth worker.   Since her debut album, Ni-Cola has ministered up and down the country and internationally at countless events; from high schools, festivals, concerts and conferences.  Ni-Cola recently embarked on a mini European tour, where she ministered in Germany and Holland.   Currently, Ni-Cola is in and out of the studio creating fresh tracks for her up and coming EP due for an autumn release and also working on her long awaited 2nd album.   Ni-Cola’s journey is by no means complete; therefore people should be excited by what will spring forth from this young woman of God.

Newhey Hi, My name is Julie Clark and I attend the Branches Christian Fellowship in Wardle, Rochdale. For many years, I have felt burdened by 2 Chronicles 7:14. "If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land."  This has led to a desire to see all the Churches in the Rochdale area coming together to pray for all aspects of our town and community. However, for local organizational purposes, Rochdale has been split into 4 Townships so I decided to start with the one where I live, work and attend Church, the Pennine Township. Hence the name Pennine Township Prayer. At the Branches, I am a Sunday school teacher and tend to prefer being in the background as opposed to heading up initiatives. However when I approached the Church leaders, they felt that as God had burdened me with this, I should go and do it! This past 6 months has been a big learning curve for me! The aim of Pennine Township Prayer is to "Stand in the Gap" for all aspects of our community. The Churches meet bi-monthly to pray for particular themes for that night, but a newsletter is issued monthly for each Church to incorporate into its prayer meetings. The main themes tend to be local government, health, education, policing, young people and children, families, etc., anything that would change the community for the better. I would love to see all the Churches in the Township involved as I am certain that unity is a key aspect of this vision and that, when this happens, God moves in power! There are numerous reasons why children live and sleep on the streets such as poverty; family strife; abuse; being orphaned, often as a result of HIV/AIDS; war and famine. Often abused or violated on the street, regarded as barely human and on the very fringe of society, they eke out an existence, begging or scavenging through rubbish for food. Our aim is that these children can realise their full potential and discover their inherent worth.   Retrak has enabled hundreds of children to move off the streets and back into their communities. We have centres in Kampala, Uganda and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and we work with partners in Kenya. Sanctus1 is a Christian community exploring spirituality in contemporary culture. Sanctus1 seeks to push at the boundaries; exploring God and spirituality within the city, in contemporary film and art, and within each other. Sanctus1 is committed to the city centre community of Manchester. The dynamic nature of the city centre reflects the people that we are; a fluid organic community that believes that the creative spirit of God is active and moving in culture. At the heart of Sanctus1 is the midweek group. This group meets on Wedensday night in Nexus Art Cafe on Dale Street. We gather for a tea or coffee at 7:30 then the evening begins at 7:45. Didsbury St James & Emmanuel church in Didsbury is a large diverse Anglican church on two sites. We have a vision for being a church where people can find a place to belong and be equiped for discipleship in three dimensions (Up to God, In to one another and Out to the world).  There are currently 18 midweek small groups in the church. St James', situated behind The Didsbury pub on Stenner Lane has two Sunday congregations (9am and 10.30).  The 10.30am service is large and friendly and covers the whole age range.  A Godly Play group for children aged 4-11+ meets every Sunday in term time except the 1st Sunday of the month, which is all age.  The 9am service is traditional in flavour and choral twice a month. Emmanuel church is on Barlow Moor Road, which is also the site of the new Parish Centre and church office.  The 10.30 service on Sunday morning is large and mixed aged.  Children's groups cover the whole age range from babies to teenagers and meet every week of the month in term time except the 1st Sunday, which is all age in church.  The 6.15 service is contemporary with a strong emphasis on practical teaching, minsitry and the gifts of the spirit. Levenshulme We are part of the Orthodox Church worldwide, (more commonly known as Greek Orthodox, Russian Orthodox, etc). Our mother Church is in the Middle East in Syria and Lebanon (Patriarchate of Antioch - Acts 11:26) but we are not an Arab language parish since English is used in all our services. We extend a warm welcome to all people (Orthodox or not) to attend our services and experience our community life. Those wishing to become members of the Orthodox Church do so upon profession of faith [and if an infant by the faith of its parent(s) and sponsor(s)] usually by chrismation (anointing with holy oil) or in the case of unbaptised or irregularly baptised persons by baptism. A course of preparation and instruction is undertaken first called the catechumenate. For details ask Fr. Gregory. The Patriarchate of Antioch has a long and distinguished history in the promotion of Christian mission and its presence is global but with main concentrations outside the Middle East) in the Americas (North and South), Europe and Australia. Our Mission Statement is to win this nation again for Christ ... this time with the FULL gospel - as once known in these islands during the first Millennium when the west was still part of the Orthodox Church. (This is a controversial claim we know but it is how we Orthodox see things). We know that this cannot be done without having warm and collaborative relations (as far as conscience will allow in matters of faith and Church life) with other Christian communities. In the light of this the Antiochian Church belongs to Churches Together in England. The priest of our community and correspondent here is Father Gregory Hallam who has had a broad experience and ministry in and out of the Orthodox Church giving him a wide personal understanding of most if not all Christian traditions. He is an Orthodox University, Prison and Hospital Chaplain for the Manchester and Salford area. In sector ministries he additionally specialises in Asylum and Immigration issues. He is also knowledgeable and appreciative of other religious traditions having had some training in this regard as a secondary teacher of Religious Education and by direct experience in his ministry. Churchill Way StreetSoccer is a football project that was instigated by the Manchester City Mission and is the responsibility of Andy Thorp, the Sports Project Manager.  There are currently 2 StreetSoccer projects and a third is about to be launched in Salford.  The most established project is based in Ardwick in Manchester that is a partnership with Barnabus, and runs from 4.30 to 6pm every Friday.  Around 16 homeless men meet to play football every week and we have developed some great relationships off the back of which a number of the guys are being discipled as we speak! StreetSoccer has a project in Bolton which is 4 months old now and approximately 20 men have attended the sessions.  The bolton project is run in partnership with Ambassadors in Sport, Urban Outreach and St Luke's drop-in. A Salford based project is due for launch in August that will be based at the Manchester City Mission in the Windsor Christian Centre.  We are always on the look out for more volunteers to serve in the project through playing football, having a meal together, getting to know the guys, and being keen to help disciple the men.  If you have a heart for homeless people and love football then do get in touch! It is a means of bringing together churches, people of good will, public services and private enterprise to work for the common goal of a better, kinder, more caring and more sustainable community. </div> <div> At the heart of the Christian message is the commandment of Christ to love your neighbour as yourself. The Big Deal is a means of putting this into practice, but doing it in such a way that it encourages mass participation and ownership. </div> <div> Since May 2005 Salford's churches have linked up and worked on projects of kindness across the city. This carried forward to Stockport during 2006/7 and is set to develop further through its involvement in Hope 2008. The whole process of preparing projects is all about creating or developing local partnerships. The projects themselves range from environmental improvements to sports, crime reducing efforts to childrens activities, old age help to arts and drama activities. The Message Trust focuses its strength in schools work. They have dedicated team of youth workers and schools bands like Blushuk ready to take The Big Deal into every High School in each borough with a programme designed to challenge young people about issues of citizenship has been created especially for RE departments and compliments the curriculum. It is highly educational and includes a stage production which presents The Big Deal of the Christian faith in an inspiring way and relevant way. And when it is all over, the work goes on. Harpurhey The Boaz Trust is a Christian organisation working to relieve the suffering of destitute asylum seekers in Greater Manchester.  The Boaz Trust was founded in 2004 by Dave Smith, in response to the growing problem of destitution amongst asylum seekers which he witnessed during his work with a local homelessness charity.  Since then we have seen much growth and now have a dedicated team of volunteers and four paid staff.   The Boaz Trust offers accommodation to asylum seekers in real need.  We currently manage eight houses in Manchester, seven of which are used to house destitute asylum seekers.  The eighth is accommodation for refugees, who struggle to find accommodation after receiving leave to remain as they do not have the money to make a deposit.  The rent they pay and the housing benefit the refugees receive helps to fund the other houses.  We also have a network of local host families who voluntarily provide emergency accommodation in spare rooms.  We accommodate about 50 asylum seekers from countries such as Zimbabwe, Somalia, Congo, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Iraq, Iran and Algeria.  However, with a waiting list of over 200 people and no other organisations in Manchester providing accommodation, there are many we are simply unable to help.  Hence we also run night shelters over the winter months, specifically for male asylum seekers sleeping on the streets.   The Boaz Trust also provides basic food parcels and other essentials, along with individual advocacy and support, helping our clients to access healthcare, communicate with solicitors and collect new evidence to submit a fresh asylum claim.  In addition, we run a programme of Meaningful Lives activities to empower our clients to integrate into the community, gain skills and socialise.  These include English classes, craft and sewing groups, gardening, and volunteering opportunities.   Furthermore, we take every opportunity to share our faith with our clients and offer bibles in different languages to all those who are interested.  We have seen several Muslims make decisions to follow Christ, and others strengthed in their Christian faith.   Asylum seekers are often misunderstood; hence part of our work involves awareness raising and challenging misconceptions.  We run roadshows for interested groups, increasing awareness of the issues faced by asylum seekers in the UK and how people can respond.  We aim to empower and encourage the Christian church to meet the needs of asylum seekers. The Boaz Trust is also actively involved in campaigning for a just asylum system, both locally and nationally.  Furthermore, we network with other organisations across the country to share knowledge and expertise.  The last few years have seen many new projects springing up in different cities across the country.   Through our work we are seeing asylum seekers released from destitution and given hope.  One Darfuri asylum seeker and Boaz client testifies:   “Really, Boaz has helped me.  Before, I had no home, no doctor, I had nothing.  The Boaz staff are very helpful and kind.  If I am honest, without Boaz, I would maybe now be dead.”   This client is now in good health and moving on with his asylum case.  He is learning English, a popular member of a local church, and a dedicated volunteer at the destitution project.  Just one example of the many lives changed through the work of the Boaz Trust.   If you would like to know more about our work please check out our website <a href="http://www.boaztrust.org.uk">www.boaztrust.org.uk</a>       "Do not take advantage of foreigners living with you in your land.  Treat them like native-born Israelites, and love them as you love yourself.  Remember that you were once foreigners living in the land of Egypt.  I am the Lord your God." London Creative Church Planting in the Inner City Urban Expression is an urban mission agency that recruits, equips, deploys and networks self-financing teams pioneering creative and relevant expressions of the Christian church in under-churched areas of the inner city. The inner city is where Christian mission in Britain has been at its most creative over the past two centuries. Many new expressions of church life, evangelism and social action were pioneered here. People have come to faith in Jesus Christ, communities have been renewed and signs of God's kingdom of justice and peace have been evident. But church life in many inner city communities is weak. So, under-churched areas of the inner city continue to challenge Christians to engage in pioneering and creative mission. Urban Expression is one response to this challenge.
